I awaken from the shouts of my little boy, trying to get me to wake up. I groan. It’s Sunday. I don’t want to wake up early on Sundays.

“Mommy!” he shouts. I sigh at my son’s persistence.

Before I know it, he’s already on the bed, trying to push me off it.

I chuckle at his insistence. “Okay. I’m up.” I say, sitting up from the bed, rubbing the sleep off my eyes.

“Good morning.” Chris greets with a huge smile on his face.

I shake my head slightly. I just can’t get mad at this kid. He’s so freaking adorable.

“Good morning.” I greet him back, giving him soft kisses all over his face.

He giggles in response, trying to get away from my grasp.

I tickle his little ribcage and tummy. He starts laughing hysterically.

“Mommy stop!” he cries out in between fits of laughter.

Deciding to show him some mercy, I listen to him and stop, peppering his faces with even more kisses.

“I love you, baby,” I tell him, meaning every word of it.

Chris hugs me tight. “Love you too, Mommy.” he reciprocates.

I pull away slightly, looking him in the eye. “We’re going to have lunch with Luke and his parents today, baby,” I tell him.

His eyes light up at the mention of Luke. “Really? I can’t wait,” he says excitedly.

I still haven’t decided if it’s a good idea to have my son get so emotionally invested in all of this. I just don’t want him to get heartbroken. Luke isn’t going to stick around as soon as he gets control over his parents’ company.

The rest of the morning, as I play with Chris, I can’t help but feel nervous about how this lunch is going to play out. I hope his parents won’t find it a problem that I’m a single mother that works simply as Luke’s secretary.

I start imagining us inside a church, in front of an altar, making a vow in front of a lot of people. My chest starts to tighten with anxiety.

Am I doing the right thing?
